National Volunteer Week: April 16-22

This year’s National Volunteer Week theme is Volunteering Weaves Us Together.

We want to celebrate you, and all our volunteers – the time, talent and energy you share to strengthen the fabric of our community. You are such an integral part of the CKUA community, and we are so grateful you’re here. We couldn’t do it without you!

Let’s hear it for our volunteers! And let’s hear FROM our volunteers! Why do you volunteer? What do you find rewarding about being a volunteer? What are your favourite memories from volunteering with CKUA?

Send an open mic recording from the CKUA app, or see below for other ways to participate. We’ll collect everyone’s comments and then share them with our beloved CKUA community during National Volunteer Week.

Use the Open Mic feature on the CKUA app

– Start by introducing yourself; we want to know your name and where you’re from

– Why do you volunteer? What are your favourite memories from volunteering with CKUA?
– What do you find rewarding about being a volunteer?
–  What are your favourite memories from volunteering with CKUA?

You have 30 seconds to record!

If you don’t have the CKUA app, you can still use your mobile to add your voice

Using an iPhone, iPad, or Mac
  • Find the Voice Memos app. This app is developed by Apple and usually located in the Utilities folder.
  • Open the app, tap the red circle record button to begin recording.
  • To adjust the recording level, move the microphone closer to or farther from what you’re recording.
  • If using an iPhone, hold it to your ear while talking, like you’re making a phone call. If using an iPad or Mac, make sure your mouth is within a foot of the device.
  • Tap the red square to stop. Tap to finish recording.
  • It should automatically give the recording a title based on the date or location. If you want to rename it, tap the recording, then tap the name and type a new one.
  • Fill out your name and song below, and press “Upload File”; select that file from your device.
Using an Android phone

Not all Androids have a built in voice recorder, but there are many available on the Play Store. Search “sound recorder’ in your apps. If nothing appears, you can download an app, such as Easy Voice Recorder or Voice Recorder Pro.

  • Find (or download) a simple voice recording app. Depending on your device there may be one already built-in.
  • Open the app and tap the record button to begin recording.
  • Hold the phone to your ear while talking, like you’re making a phone call.
  • When you finish recording, press the stop button.
  • Listen back to make sure it sounds the way you want it to.
  • Fill out your name and song below, and press “Upload File”; select that file from your device.

General tips for a good recording

  • Please try to keep your recording between 20-30 seconds.
  • Find the quietest room you can, away from windows. Turn off the radio, TV, or anything else that makes noise.
  • Recording on a smartphone? Hold it to your ear like you’re making a phone call, instead of holding it in front of your face.
  • Recording on a computer or tablet? Position yourself close to the device, place your mouth roughly 6-12 inches from the microphone.
  • Do you have a pair of headphones or earbuds with a built-in mic? This may offer better quality than the device by itself.
  • Pauses before or after the recording are fine
