On Art: The ‘Hero Material’ of great Canadian women

Interview

What do civil rights activist Viola Desmond, artist Emily Carr, and musicians Buffy Sainte-Marie and k.d. Lang have in common?

Not only are they great Canadian women, they are also the focus of a new exhibition by Edmonton-based costume designer Leona Brausen.

Leona is paying tribute to the lives, cultural contributions and unique style of each woman using found art and vintage materials. Titled Hero Material, the exhibition is on now in the windows of the Varscona Theatre in Edmonton.

CKUA’s Lisa Wilton spoke with Brausen and asked her why she chose to focus on these four women.
