Secret Santa surprises CKUA Staff with a donated hour

Feature

We recently had a mystery supporter donate an hour and dedicate it to the CKUA team behind the scenes! Tony King graciously agreed to undertake this special project and curate a special hour from a list of the requests and musical selections of our team for December 16th at 1pm.

Here are a few of the songs and stories staff submitted:

“Little by Little” by Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings

It’s become a bit of a fundraiser theme song. Our pledge drives are times of enormous fun, but they also involve a lot of details and planning. This song reminds our whole team to take it one step at a time.

Natalie Cook, Communications Coordinator

“In Your Mind” by Johnny Cash

My dad was a huge Johnny Cash fan and passed away in September. I saw JC with my Mom and Dad in the late 90s at Northlands.

Mark Rodgers, Technical Producer

“How Not To Drown” by CHVRCHES

This is from one of my favourite album releases of 2021. Also,  I have a fond memories of getting to play CHVRCHES not only on the Otherside of Midnight, but also during Alberta Morning when Grant let me operate the last hour of his show! We’re both big fans of the band so it was fun geeking out about them with Grant.

Scott Zielsdorf, Production Assistant

“This Little Light of Mine”  by Coco Love Alcorn

When the world starts to get a little too busy and hectic or too close and dark, this song is a sweet reminder to just “be.”

Karen Parent, External Relations Assistant

“Lujon” by Henry Mancini

Henry Mancini is a perennial favourite and so elegant. Makes me think of sun and heat, and couldn’t we all use that right now?

Jodi Lucas, Sales and Senior Development Officer

“Stone Cold Crazy” by Queen

I think “Stone Cold Crazy” captures the behind-the-scenes energy and exhilaration of the campaign, and, by 10pm on the last Sunday I think we’re all a little Stone Cold Crazy, and we are also the champions…

Shaun Friesen, Digital and Social Media Coordinator

“Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” by The Partridge Family

Came out in 1971 and that album was my Christmas present that year. I was obsessed with David Cassidy along with every other 12-year-old girl at the time! Had at least 140 of his pictures from teen magazines plastered on my bedroom wall, much to my mother’s dismay.

Sharon Cross, Traffic Coordinator

“This Dance is You” by Andrea House

Written for Monica Miller. Both Andrea and Monica are cherished friends.

Karen Howell, Community Engagement Manager

“Coldest Night of the Year” by Bruce Cockburn

When I was 18 I got to meet Bruce backstage after my first time seeing him perform live–he came to my little old hometown of Christchurch, New Zealand. Now living in Canada, I know a little more first-hand what the coldest night of the year really means. A couple of years ago I visited Toronto, found Yonge Street and walked up and down with this song blasting in my headphones on repeat. I didn’t see any punkers playing or bikers dancing but I did feel a very strong connection to my very favourite artist of all time, Mr. Bruce Cockburn.

Greg Latham, Development Manager

“Diaraby” by Ali Farka Toure and Ry Cooder

I discovered this song by pure chance. Then, I didn’t have CKUA to help me widen my musical tastes, so it was a trial and error effort. I borrowed the Talking Timbuktu CD from my local library, and I was blown away by this song. I think it was the first time that I listened to Malian music and it was instant love.
