On Theatre: ‘The Great Whorehouse Fire of 1921’

Interview

The Great Whorehouse Fire of 1921 is the latest production from Northern Light Theatre, written by Edmonton playwright Linda Wood Edwards.

The play is described as “a comedic-themed, historically based drama about small town gossip, support, and sabotage,” and imagines the events surrounding a house fire in the village of Big Valley, Alberta in December of 1921. It promises to explore “the uneasy intertwining of prostitution and ‘proper’ society, and the ways that women support and sabotage one another.”

The play will have its professional premiere following a sold-out run at the Edmonton International Fringe Festival in 2018.

ON Wednesday, November 17, 2021 on Alberta Morning, CKUA’s Tony King brought us a preview, uncovering the historical inspiration behind the story, in his interview with Linda Wood Edwards.
