On Theatre: Squeamish at Edmonton’s Northern Light Theatre

Interview

In keeping with the season that brings out ghouls and goblins, Edmonton’s Northern Light Theatre returns with their horror-laced production of Squeamish. This solo show that debuted Off-Broadway in New York tells the story of Sharon, an Upper West Side shrink who drops everything, including her psychotropic medication, to wander through Texas following the death of her nephew.

At its core, this play is about blood, as it runs through families, personal relationships and kinship, but also how spilling it can have a deep emotional impact. Squeamish runs at the ATB Financial Arts Barns from October 20 through November 5. Part of the challenge in mounting this play is the actor playing Sharon must be adventurous and versatile enough to peel off layers to expose the feral qualities of human existence without losing the delicate nuance of the character.

CKUA’s Tony King talked with actor Davina Stewart about how she is preparing to dive into all things Squeamish!
