On Theatre: Mieko Ouchi directs a technicolour Pride & Prejudice

Interview

Playwright Kate Hamill took on Jane Austen’s precious Pride and Prejudice novel and adapted it for the stage. She chose to excise the oft construed drab pallet of 19th century Britain, electing instead to inject it with a technicolour energy through bright costumes and music, all without losing the flirtatious charm of the characters.

The Citadel Theatre in Edmonton is presenting Kate Hamill’s adaptation of Pride and Prejudice March 11 – April 2.

Wednesday, March 8th is International Women’s Day; fittingly, Tony King will invite Director Mieko Ouchi onto Thoroughfare to talk about why Jane Austen is still relevant all these years later and how this play relates to her personally.
