On Poetry: Wakefield Brewster

Interview

Wakefield Brewster started down his poetry path 21 yeas ago in Toronto. Since relocating to Calgary, he’s immersed himself in the local poetry and spoken word community, and Alberta’s wider arts and culture scene.

In April, Brewster was announced as Calgary’s newest Poet Laureate, taking over from Natalie Meisner. He will hold the role until 2024.

When the announcement was made public, Calgary Arts Development president and CEO Patti Pon said, “Wakefield is a poet and spoken word artist with a passion and intensity that are sure to unleash a new age for poetry in our city.”

CKUA host Lisa Wilton recently chatted with Wakefield Brewster, to ask him about how he’s approaching this new role, and to learn more about what words and poetry mean to him.
