Considered a seminal work in Canadian, queer, and feminist literature, Le Désert Mauve follows 15-year-old Mélanie as she drives across Arizona to look for adventure and escape the confines of her mother’s desert motel. Egypto-Québecois composer Symon Henry brings Nicole Brossard‘s riveting text to the stage in their experimental production, Opera Le Désert Mauve.
This unique production utilizes voice, sound design, visuals, and poetry to bring Mélanie’s story to life. New Works Calgary is presenting the touring production at cSpace King Edward on March 23 and 24, before it heads to the Black Box Theatre at Orange Hub in Edmonton on March 26.
Symon Henry joined CKUA’s Lisa Wilton on Traffic Jams to share more about upcoming shows.
