On Films: ‘Alberta: Growing Up Black’

Interview

This week, US president Joe Biden signed a bill into law to make Juneteenth (or June 19) a federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery.

In connection with Juneteenth, Deborah Dobbins, founder of the Shiloh Centre for Multicultural Roots, is getting set to debut a new documentary entitled Alberta: Growing Up Black. In the film, six Alberta youth share their ancestral histories. Over the years, the Shiloh Centre has worked to document the histories of hundreds of African Americans who made their way north to Alberta in the 1900’s.

On the Friday, June 18, 2021 episode of Throughfare, CKUA’s Alexis Reid spoke with Deborah Dobbins about the new film, which debuts online Tuesday, June 22.
