Originally hailing from Slave Lake, AB, Omar Mouallem is an accomplished journalist and filmmaker. In addition to his award-winning book Praying to the West: How Muslims Shaped the Americas, Mouallem has also produced two documentary short films. His 2021 documentary, titled The Last Baron, explored the unlikely connection between Lebanon’s civil war and Alberta’s iconic Burger Baron restaurants. Since then, Mouallem has announced that the film is being extended into a longer documentary and retitled The Lebanese Burger Mafia. The new feature-length documentary premieres at Hot Docs in Toronto on May 3, 2023.
