On Dance: ESPARTENAE at the Tipton arena

Kate Stashko and Deviani Andrea are presenting a piece that challenge the conventions of dance, basin / ESPARTANÆ, in a venue that is normally the domain of hockey players, the Tipton Arena in Edmonton.

Kate Stashko’s basin, explores the French meaning of “bassin” which refers to the pelvis. In basin, Stashko uses the word as a jumping off point for exploring the taboos and connotations associated with that part of the body. Deviani Andrea’s ESPARTENAE explores the plurality of what strength of character means as it pertains to physical strength and emotional vulnerability.

On Wednesday’s Thoroughfare, host Tony King invites Deviani Andrea in to talk about the philosophy of bringing dance into unlikely spaces and offer a preview of her work designed to challenge the capacities of her own body:
