On Art: “The Soil Between Plants” at Latitude 53 Gallery

Interview

The Soil Between Plants is a metaphor for nurturing the spaces beyond the obvious. It’s also the title of an exhibit at Edmonton’s Latitude 53 until January 29th.

The exhibition was curated by, and is the brainchild of Sanaa Humayun and Kiona Callihoo Ligtvoet. They’re the founders of the digital networking hub Making Space. The overarching mandate of Making Space is to create an open environment for emerging racialized artists to celebrate their work and be mentored in a non-judgmental environment.

The culmination of two years’ worth of work has led to this inaugural exhibition, featuring a number of talented artists. Tony King recently spoke with Sanaa Humayan and Kiona Callihoo Ligtvoet about the beauty of exploring The Soil Between Plants.
