On Art: Money Zoo at the Nickle Galleries

If you look at the coins in your pocket, you might see a moose, a loon and a polar bear. However, Canadian money certainly isn’t the only currency that features animals.

An exhibition currently on at Calgary’s Nickle Galleries explores why animals are on our money, along with the historical use of animals as currency – you know, back when you had to trade a cow or two to obtain various goods and services.

Curated by Marina Fischer and Carolyn Willekes, Money Zoo: Fantastic Beasts in the History of Money explores the intricate relationship and connection between humans and animals through the lens of historical currency.
