Joel Wood receives the first OHSOTO’KINO Recording Bursary

Joel Wood was born to drum and sing, and to share his gift with others. His father is one of the founders of the globally acclaimed Maskwacis-based powwow and round dance band, Northern Cree. In recent years, Joel has also become a member of that group.

Joel is also a renowned drum-maker, and his new solo album, Singing Is Healing, recently earned him a JUNO Award nomination. Excitingly, it was just announced this week that Joel Wood is one of the first recipients of the National Music Centre‘s new OHSOTO’KINO Recording Bursary.

Joel recently joined CKUA’s Grant Stovel to talk about being one of the first artists to participate in this new Indigenous programming initiative, and what he’s planning to create during his time at the NMC:
