The Immigrant Council for Arts Innovation (ICAI) is beginning a new year of its Artist of the Month program. The ICAI is a Calgary-based organization that helps connect immigrant artists with new creative opportunities in Canada. Their Artist of the Month program spotlights a different artist each month and covers a diverse range of backgrounds and artistic disciplines.
The first Artist of the Month for 2023 is Mexican-born actor and musician Graciela Rubalcaba, who moved to Canada more than a decade ago. Graciela fell in love with acting at a very young age and was immediately drawn to the life of a theatre actor. Her time spent on stage would eventually lead her to working on movies in Mexico. Upon moving to Canada, Graciela’s acting career was put on pause to get acquainted with life in her new country. Graciela spent nine years in Montreal, and more recently, she and her family have settled in Calgary.
Graciela Rubalcaba joins CKUA’s Lisa Wilton on Traffic Jams to tell us about the highs and lows of re-establishing her artistic career in a new country.
