Dr. Shumaila Hemani blends worlds, eras, and languages through her music and poetry. She also brings a deep well of knowledge from her academic background in the sacred Sufi music and culture. In addition to being a singer, she’s described as an acousmatic performer and sound sculptor. Her acclaimed debut album as a composer and recording artist was released in 2022, entitled Mannat.
June 2 and 3, she’ll be performing at Calgary’s Arts Commons, alongside Alien Trap Lords and TD Incubator Cabaret Series curators Sargeant X Comrade. SXC say of this show: “Under the theme of Moon: Indigo Child, we’re embracing our nocturnal sides. How does your perspective change at night? What secrets will emerge in the darkness; what surprises will be illuminated?”
