Arts & Culture, September 9 – 13, 2024

This week we’ll meet two Alberta musicians who are being honoured for their work. We talk to the director of a new documentary which will premiere at the Calgary International Film Festival, and we’ll learn about a new art exhibition. Plus, romance is in the air with an author’s debut novel, Sunshine and Spice.

Atlanta’s International Singer Songwriters Association is recognizing Lloydminster-based artist Caroline Parke with one of its Songwriter of the Year awards. She joins CKUA’s Leo Cripps to tell us more about this recent honour, and how it’s a sign she’s headed in the right direction.

The documentary “New Wave” will make its Canadian premiere at this year’s Calgary International Film Festival. The film’s director, Elizabeth Ai, joins CKUA’s Lisa Wilton to tell us about this film.

Afro-Indigenous musician Diana Hellson is being recognized with the 2024 TD Indigenous Songwriter Award. She joins CKUA’s Tony King to talk about what this honour means to her and where she may be headed next.

Thursday, September 12 at 12:40pm MT on The Upload 

Karen Tam’s “Sea of Clouds” is a deep dive into the history of World Fairs, and how China was represented at these huge international events, from the 1851 London Fair to the 2010 Shanghai Expo. She will share the inspiration behind this exhibition with CKUA’s Kate Stevens.

Bengali-Canadian author Aurora Palit has written an unapologetic romance, Sunshine and Spice, She joins CKUA’s Grant Stovel to share her own story and how it led to the creation of her debut novel.
