Arts & Culture

CKUA’s arts and culture interviews, airing each weekday, are short, compelling conversations with musicians, comedians, authors, artists, choreographers, actors, filmmakers, directors, and more. We love to talk to people who make cool things and do cool things, and we know what’s new and happening, all around the province.

Tune in when you can, or return to this page at the end of the week to hear the interviews online. *All features are subject to schedule or other changes.

Early this month, Calgary’s Arts Commons announced its 2024/2025 season of programming. This year’s run of shows includes A Tribute to Bob Marley with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, featuring the vocal talents of Ammoye, Steele, Omega Mighty and Soji Joseph. On Monday’s Discoveries, we’ll learn more about this exciting show and the new season with Jesse Jones of Jones & Jones Productions.

Tuesday, June 25 at 5:40pm on Traffic Jams with Lisa Wilton

But soft! Described as “Riverdale meets Wet Hot American Summer meets Shakespeare,” Riverona: The Complete Box Set is a funny and irreverent retelling of Romeo and Juliet. On Tuesday’s Traffic Jams, Lisa is joined by playwright Megan Baldrey (who also plays Juliet) to chat about this new production from Calgary’s Full Circle Theatre.

Friday, June 28 at 8:40am on Alberta Morning with Grant Stovel

A light comic opera based on a beloved, witty, insightful novel by masterful writer (and longtime Albertan) Thomas King, Indians on Vacation traces a middle-aged Indigenous couple’s tourist journey, through histories both large and small. A new workshop production of this comedic opera at Banff Centre features the stellar Marion Newman, a Banff Centre faculty-member who joins Grant in conversation Friday morning.
