This week, we speak with author and filmmaker Cheryl Foggo. Melanie Demers tells us about Cabaret Noir. We ask director Levi Holwell about the film Magic Hours. Author Bertrand Bickersteth knows all about the history of Black cowboys in Alberta. We ask Darren Jordan about 5 Artists 1 Love.

The Women’s Centre of Calgary is presenting an evening with award-winning Albertan storyteller Cheryl Foggo. She has published numerous literary works, including novels and scripts for both screen and stage. Before she takes the stage at Calgary’s Venue 308, Cheryl Foggo joins CKUA’s Leo Cripps to tell us more about this exciting evening of stories and conversation.

Edmonton’s Brian Webb Dance Company is presenting a special show by Montreal-based international dance company, Mayday Danse described as “equal parts High Mass, happening, and plea for recognition. CKUA’s Lisa Wilton is joined by choreographer and Artistic Director Mélanie Demers.

The Nordlys Film & Arts Festival is a not-for-profit film fest that seeks to illuminate the darkness of this time of year by lighting the silver screen in the town of Camrose. Among the films being screened as part of this year’s lineup is Magic Hours, a documentary from director Levi Holwell that grapples with the struggles of historic movie theatres. CKUA’s Tony King learns more about this festival.

Author and educator Bertrand Bickersteth has been busy researching Black cowboys in Alberta, and that research is being incorporated into an upcoming poetry collection. “Re-presenting the Lives and Language of Black Cowboys” takes place February 9 and will focus on this lesser-known history. Bertrand Bickersteth sits down with CKUA’s Kate Stevens.
