Rocio Graham holds an annual funeral for her garden, celebrating the Day of the Dead

Interview

Multidisciplinary artist, Rocio Graham, moved from Mexico to Calgary in 2002. She was introduced to our seasons when a freak September snowstorm killed her beloved garden. She now conducts a funeral for her flora each fall through the celebration of the Day of the Dead.

This year’s altar also honours all else that has been lost due to COVID-19. Visitors are encouraged to submit anonymous letters of grief, which will be used for a living performance art project next year.

Rocio spoke with us about how her Mexican upbringing inspired her annual tradition, My Garden’s Funeral.

My Garden’s Funeral will run until November 27 at the Arts Commons in Calgary. Find out more at blog.arts commons.ca.
