2100 LPs: Celebrating UofA’s Asch Folkways Collection

Interview

In 1985, Moses and Frances Asch gifted the University of Alberta a complete collection of Folkways Records.

The Aschs’ collection includes over 2100 records encompassing folk, roots, blues, bluegrass, jazz, spoken-word, global musics, and sound recordings of things like cityscapes and weather events.

To celebrate the 115th anniversary of Asch’s birth, the U of A’s Sound Studies Institute is presenting some of their favourite recordings from the collection in a special online event on Wednesday, Dec 2, 2020 at 7 PM (MST).

The two tour guides and hosts for this livestream talk are Sound Studies Institute Director, Scott Smallwood, and Interim Director of the Centre for Ethnomusicology, Dr. Julia Byl.

They both dropped by Alberta Morning with Grant Stovel to each share one favourite record from the Folkways catalogue, as a way of illustrating what makes Folkways Records–and founder Moses Asch–so very special.
