Cam Hayden

Cam Hayden knows blues. He’s got the resumé to prove it. He’s guided CKUA listeners through the genre for over 40 years. He’s also been a producer of the Edmonton Blues Festival since he helped bring it to life in 1999.

To further illustrate his devotion, Cam also has the awards. These include a spot in the Edmonton Blues Hall of Fame, the Keeping the Blues Alive award from the Blues Foundation in Memphis, Blues Booster of the Year award in 2016, and a Maple Blues Award -- all for his work championing the music he loves.

“There’s something basic and true about blues, it’s just real,” says Cam. “It touches me in a way that is deep and personal and truthful. It’s an evolving musical form but the themes are always the same, about life, living, love…”

This Edmonton-based blues aficionado is hardly one-dimensional, however. He’s been at the helm of a whole range of CKUA shows since the mid ‘70s, spinning everything from classical music to electronica. He once won an award for his work playing reggae on CKUA, and boasts a level of fame for the pies he bakes. (His lemon meringue is particularly popular.)

This motorbike-enthusiast’s influences vary widely. He is always on the hunt for new music, often traversing the globe (on his Harley when possible) in pursuit of it.
