Terra Spencer and Ben Caplan – Upcoming AB Dates
Terra Spencer will be performing her new album “Old News” at The Station on Jasper on January 12 2023
Award-winning Atlantic Canadian artists Ben Caplan and Terra Spencer have just released their first album together titled “Old News” on October 14, 2022. Combining Terra’s creative prowess as a storytelling songwriter with Ben’s first foray into music production, their analog recorded album features intimate duets, compelling solo performances, exquisite musical craftsmanship, and the organic ambiance of listening rooms from long ago. An album that unites the charming allure of the golden era of jazz with the authentic warmth of 1970’s analog recordings and two contrasting voices, Old News offers a nostalgic yet remarkably current take on loss and letting go. Old News is a collection of real and imagined stories, told by two very different voices; funeral director-turned-songwriter Terra Spencer was awarded Music Nova Scotia’s 2021 Recording of The Year for her self-produced sophomore album and coined “the real deal” by legendary Canadian artist Ron Sexmith. Explosive performer and newly-minted producer Ben Caplan has played some of the world’s most coveted stages including Glastonbury and SXSW, and was branded “an unmistakable presence” by the UK’s Independent Newspaper.
About “Old News”:
Terra and Ben’s debut as a duo on Old News showcases their remarkable talents and willingness to challenge themselves as artists. Ben saw in Terra’s prolific writing the opportunity to produce an album of material other than his own for the first time, bringing to the table his appetite for ambitious arrangements, diverse taste in instrumental music, and his circle of players from his years of touring with the rotating members of his band, The Casual Smokers. It was Ben’s distinctive voice that first inspired Terra to reach out to him between Covid lockdowns, hoping to cast him in the role of the reminiscing widower portrayed in “VHS”. An album of undeniable warmth, the analog style of recording and juxtaposition of Terra’s gentle delivery with Ben’s husky growl make for an incredibly engaging listen, exploring loss and longing with empathy, intimate vocal performances, and Terra’s signature storytelling.
