Soft Body

Friday, March 21st

Soft Body by Wei Li is exhibiting in The New Gallery’s Main Space from March 21 – May 3, 2025.

Skin, organelles, ribbons and strings are carefully tangled in bright colours, a testament to the physicality and emotional experience of femininity. Paired with Wei Li’s intricately painted compositions are moving 3D rendered designs. Hypnotic spirals and dreamy colours hypnotize the viewer and entwine with themes of resilience throughout the exhibition. Together, these mediums bridge the gap between traditional and contemporary mediums, creating a cohesive body of work that invites the viewer to experience these themes from multiple perspectives. The complexities within Wei Li’s paintings and 3D rendered works evoke a bodily experience and speak to the societal expectation and meticulous nature of feminine labour.

Wei Li is a Calgary-based artist working in painting and digital media, exploring identity and experience through the lens of her Chinese-Canadian heritage as a female artist. Li completed her BFA (with Distinction) at the University of Alberta in 2017 and has since participated in shows/residencies across Canada and the United States. Li was a finalist in the RBC Canadian Painting Competition, and her work was shown at the National Gallery of Canada. Since the pandemic, she has ventured into the digital realm. Her debut digital series, Vessels, received widespread recognition, and she was awarded the Emerging Digital Artist Award in 2021.

———————————————————————————-

The CKUA Events Calendar is a listing of music, arts, and culture happenings for the whole province. It is a terrific resource that CKUA offers to the community, to share details about concerts, gallery openings, plays, and films.

Please note that due to the amount of listings, we publish events that focus on music, arts, or culture. While we'd love to publish all submitted items, the sheer number of events means that we sometimes have to decline submissions.

Need to change or update your submitted event?

Email details to feedback@ckua.com and the CKUA team of calendar volunteers will do the rest.
