Sechile Sedare with Kate Stevens

Friday, January 31st

Sechile Sedare is Dene for “my younger brother, my older sister,” which doubles as the eponymous band name for siblings Leela Gilday and Jay Gilday. A residency at the Banff Centre in 2021 during COVID lockdown gave them the opportunity to convert their natural storytelling gifts into a repertoire of driving, twin guitar-based songs about life on the traditional homelands of the NWT. With powerful, soaring vocals and a warm, light-hearted rapport with audiences, Sechile Sedare unlock a world of histories and herstories, teach us about what connection to the land means in Canada’s north, and present it all in a contemporary roots format that is a unique blend of entertainment and enlightenment.

Calgary’s Kate Stevens is charting her own course as a sultry, vivacious, jazz-inflected R&B singer-songwriter. A media-savvy graduate of SAIT Polytechnic and a CKUA radio host, she is making waves as she makes her mark playing venues such as the National Music Centre and the Calgary Folk Music Festival. Lean into the beyond-her-years vibe she projects and you too will understand the buzz.

———————————————————————————-

The CKUA Events Calendar is a listing of music, arts, and culture happenings for the whole province. It is a terrific resource that CKUA offers to the community, to share details about concerts, gallery openings, plays, and films.

Please note that due to the amount of listings, we publish events that focus on music, arts, or culture. While we'd love to publish all submitted items, the sheer number of events means that we sometimes have to decline submissions.

Need to change or update your submitted event?

Email details to feedback@ckua.com and the CKUA team of calendar volunteers will do the rest.
