Roger Admiral | Edmonton Saxophone Quartet

Friday, June 14th

Roger Admiral, one of the key figures in new music here for decades, will unleash every aspect of his virtuosity in an explosive set of solo works and a new ensemble piece. Premiere solo works include new compositions by Edmonton composers Siaw kin Lee and Will Northlich-Redmond, alongside the Alberta premiere of Liza Lim’s epic, The Four Season, a 30-minute work written in tribute to artist Cy Twombly, in particular, the ecstatic colours, calligraphic lines, paint washes and hidden poetic scrawlings, that comprise Twombley’s painting, Quattro Stagione.

To get things going, Roger will partner with The Edmonton Saxophone Quartet to give the world premiere of Howard Bashaw’s 13 for Saxophone Quintet. With the unusual combination of low saxophones (alto, tenor, baritone and bass) and piano, 13 grooves along with almost unbelievable rhythmic energy for some 30 minutes in a wonderfully strange series of growly, loudly, playfully fantastic short pieces for this unprecedented ensemble.

Tickets $20/$25. Festival passes $60/$75 at Eventbrite.

———————————————————————————-

The CKUA Events Calendar is a listing of music, arts, and culture happenings for the whole province. It is a terrific resource that CKUA offers to the community, to share details about concerts, gallery openings, plays, and films.

Please note that due to the amount of listings, we publish events that focus on music, arts, or culture. While we'd love to publish all submitted items, the sheer number of events means that we sometimes have to decline submissions.

Need to change or update your submitted event?

Email details to feedback@ckua.com and the CKUA team of calendar volunteers will do the rest.
