Robbie Burns Night at Calgary’s Rocky Mountain Folk Club
Burns Night is always a popular event at The Rocky. We’ll start off with a set from the Calgary Burns Club Singers. They’ll sing a mix of songs by Robert Burns, other traditional songs of Scotland, and a few others as well. The highlight of the group’s performances was participation in the Edinburgh Military Tattoo in 2009, on the 250th anniversary of Robert Burns birth. After a break Bill Hawes will pipe in the haggis, and Jim Hutchens will perform the Address to the Haggis. Following the Address will be a few more pipe tunes and a break for haggis!
Our headliner, Gordon McCulloch, will take the stage for the rest of the evening. Gordon performed for many years with the Calgary-based group Seanachie. They released several CD’s, including Telling Tales, A Quarrel with Whiskey and A Parting Cup. Gordon wrote several of the songs performed by the group. He writes, sings and plays with passion, yet also “It’s his habit to sell his songwriting and singing abilities short, laughing all the while.” (James Muretich, Calgary Herald)
