Play the Parks
Presented by the TD Music Connected Series, Play the Parks is an annual music program that focuses on showcasing local, diverse and talented artists in Toronto’s Downtown for the past 10 years. This year, Play the Parks is expanding into 13 cities across Canada. Curated by Canada’s Music Incubator (CMI), the free, musically, and culturally diverse concert series will spotlight over 100 musicians, connecting communities from coast to coast throughout the rest of the summer.
On September 3rd, and 17th, six diverse artists will perform in FREE outdoor concerts at Century Gardens, cSPACE Park, and Good Neighbour Historic Firehall Park, notably featuring Uyemi. Uyemi is a singer-songwriter from Calgary. Born in Nigeria, she grew up listening to all kinds of genres from 2face to Rihanna to Little Dragon and more. Recently, Uyemi landed in the Top 100 of CBC’s Searchlight contest in 2020 for her self-empowering single, “Don’t Get in Your Way,” about not getting in the way of your success and facing the world head forward. Uyemi will be performing at Good Neighbour Historic Firehall Park on September 17, at 5 pm.
In addition to Uyemi, here are three diverse and incredibly talented local artists, including:
TAYLR – cSPACE Park – September 3 – 2 pm
TAYLR’s lyrics take their listeners through colourful imagery about the complexities of life and love. While exploring the genres of folk, RnB, soul and indie, TAYLR has found a unique blend of ear-catching melody and captivating tone that is reflected in each song, weaving a technicolour story for each listener to fall into.
Colin Carbonera – cSPACE Park – September 3 – 2 pm
Colin Carbonera is a songwriter, producer, and recording artist based in Calgary, Alberta. His studio work often lends itself to a mixture of live instruments and mangled, processed elements, marked by a wide palette of musical styles.
Dragon Fli Empire – Good Neighbour Historic Firehall Park – September 17 – 5 pm
For 20 years, Dragon Fli Empire has showcased their unique brand of conscious and melodic hip hop from their origins in Calgary to the world. They started turning heads with their anthem for the contemplative bus rider, “Mount Pleasant” which received significant traction on indie radio throughout Canada in the early 2000s. Their infectious, energizing live shows have rocked crowds in North America, Europe and South America.
