Paper Cutting Workshop

Tuesday, July 30th

Jess Richter will be leading a paper cutting workshop where participants will explore German paper cutting (scherenschnitte). German paper cutting, a folk art traditionally practiced by women, engages with the silhouette, symmetry, and nature to create harmonious narrative images. Jess will help students design and cut their own pieces, sharing her own contemporary process that takes inspiration from this folk tradition to create meaningful narrative images that explore familial mourning and ritual. Limited space, registration required.

Jess Richter is an artist based in Oskana, Treaty 4 Territory, Saskatchewan, Canada. She earned an MFA in Print Media from the University of Regina in 2017, and was the Director of the Art Gallery of Regina from 2019 – 2022. Maintaining her creative practice throughout her administrative leadership, she is now a full-time practicing artist with an emphasis on intuitive printmaking practices, painting, performance, site-specific installation, contemporary folk practices, papercutting, film, and sculpture with unconventional materials. Her solo and collaborative work has been shown across Canada, and was recently selected as a participant for the Santa Muerta residency at the Santa Rosa Healing Arts Centre. In August 2023, she was able to take a workshop with Emily Hunt at the Berlin Art Institute. Upcoming solo exhibitions include Last Mountain Lake Cultural Centre in February 2025, and will be presenting a collaborative project at PAVED Arts in November 2024.

She is a witch|hexe of geographically muddled origins, and is part of the post-war east German diaspora.

———————————————————————————-

The CKUA Events Calendar is a listing of music, arts, and culture happenings for the whole province. It is a terrific resource that CKUA offers to the community, to share details about concerts, gallery openings, plays, and films.

Please note that due to the amount of listings, we publish events that focus on music, arts, or culture. While we’d love to publish all submitted items, the sheer number of events means that we sometimes have to decline submissions.

Need to change or update your submitted event?

Email details to feedback@ckua.com and the CKUA team of calendar volunteers will do the rest.
