New Jazz Underground

“It absolutely cooks here.” – NPR
Blazing a trail for a new generation of jazz artists, New Jazz Underground fuses the heart of traditional jazz with the pulse of today—infused with swing, hip-hop, Afro-Cuban grooves, house, and Afrobeat. Millions have discovered their high-energy sound through viral videos that showcase the group’s infectious chemistry, masterful musicianship, and fearless creativity.
Formed in New York City by bassist/composer Sebastian Rios and drummer TJ Reddick, the band first came together during lockdown in 2020 while studying at The Juilliard School. What began as jam sessions in city parks soon evolved into a movement, including regular collaborations with pianist Emmet Cohen and appearances alongside artists like Jon Batiste, Sullivan Fortner, and ELEW. Rios is also a longtime protégé of legendary bassist Ron Carter.
Their 2025 release Dying of Thirst builds on the success of genre-bending projects like MF Doom Suite, Harlem to Havana, and cook/swing/work/relax—music that pays tribute to jazz icons while boldly pushing the art form forward.
With the powerhouse lineup of Noah Halpern (trumpet), Isaiah J. Thompson (piano), Sebastian Rios (bass), and TJ Reddick (drums), New Jazz Underground brings an electrifying live show that’s redefining what jazz can be—fresh, fearless, and absolutely cooking.
