Jiā yóu! by Kev Liang

Jiā yóu! is a contemporary art exhibition located at The New Gallery in Calgary’s downtown Chinatown.
The opening reception for Jiā yóu! will be held on January 27th from 7PM-9PM.
The exhibition will run from January 26 – March 9, 2024, Wed-Fri 10-6PM, Sat 12-6PM. In Jiā yóu!, Kev Liang subverts traditional emblems and objects in order to investigate his anxieties that stem from his Chinese-Canadian cultural identity. Through drawing parallels between his personal experiences as a queer, second-generation, Chinese-Canadian and the history of Chinese immigrants in Canada, Liang questions how he and others like himself can find a sense of belonging within these traditional and historical systems. Through his use of print media and digital media, Liang expresses and reflects upon existential anxieties that stem from his cultural and personal identity, evoking feelings of detachment and unfamiliarity.
