I Am Because We Are

Black history is a rich tapestry of resilience and achievement, spanning figures like Harriet
Tubman, who guided enslaved people to freedom, and inventors like Lewis Latimer, who helped
develop the lightbulb. Key stories include Ruby Bridges integrating schools at age 6, Frederick
Douglass’s powerful advocacy, and the civil rights, scientific, and cultural milestones that
shaped modern society.
Come gather Wednesday February 11th, 2026 at 6pm at the Downtown Stanley Milner
Edmonton Public Library Makerspace Studio Lab to celebrate the achievements of local African
diaspora and Indigenous Community members. Hear them share stories of struggle, resilience,
perseverance and triumph accompanied by performing artists from different backgrounds.
