DJ Noodle Soup and Jia Jia Yong | Mustafa Rafiq | Jacob Audrey Taves | Shawn Pinchbeck
We’re back in the Mile Zero Dance space for the final night of Now Hear This 2024, with another amazing group of artists. Get ready for a dizzying array of sights and sounds: loops, grooves, expanded tuning systems, quadraphonic sound, analogue synths, live-processed video, and much more!
Konghou Electric is a set of 3 pieces performed by DJ Noodle Soup on the mixer and Jia Jia Yong on the konghou. Their musical collaboration explores spaces between the modern and ancient. Classical Chinese music is interleaved with digital effects and textures, drum and bass, and lo-fi, jazz-inspired improvisations.
Mustafa Rafiq, whose work with Takleef Ensemble, Jarius Sharif, skin tone, and many others, here, and across the country, is quickly bringing him to wider recognition as an important voice in new music. This rare solo performance offers a unique glimpse of Mustafa’s ongoing exploration of innovative guitar tuning, pushing the instrument ever-closer into the sound emerging from Mustafas mind’s eye.
Jacob Audrey Taves has quickly established themself as a key part of our community through performances, recordings and promotion of other artists. Their towering multimedia performance, The Remaining Functionality of Abandoned States, offers a kaleidoscopic live soundscape achieved through pushing equipment to the limits of sonic fracture, producing a powerful metaphor for the detritus of malignant policy and organization.
One of Edmonton’s foremost music and sound creatives, Shawn Pinchbeck will premiere a new, live performance piece. Combining sounds and images created and manipulated in real time, this performance will be an intense, immersive, and transformative sensory journey. Analogue synthesizer, close mic’d metal objects, bent electronics, accelerometers, and movement-controlled video, and more, are part of this unmissable chance to see Shawn Pinchbeck performing in person!
Tickets from $20, available at Eventbrite. Cash bar available.
