“da Costa: notes towards a novel, or Black lives across time” by Professor David Chariandy
In this Black History Month lecture, Chariandy will discuss the process of the historical recovery of Mathieu da Costa, the first known “Black Canadian.” da Costa worked as an interpreter between European traders/colonists and Indigenous peoples. As a thinker and creative artiste whose work focuses on Black lives, Chariandy will show the entangled lives of people who live in what is now called Canada, furthering our examination of settler colonialism. He will share notes from his research on the significance of Black lives and the complicated process of historical recovery. Through this lecture, both on- and off-campus communities will learn new ways to challenge the narrative of Blacks as new arrivants to Canada, thereby revealing the entangled relationality of different subjects in Canada.
