Cryoscapes

Photographer Nigel Midwinter, in the exhibition Cryoscapes, explores the tension between fragility and force within Alberta’s winter landscapes. Shot on the frozen surface of Abraham Lake, these black-and-white photographs transform cracked ice, pressure ridges, and trapped methane bubbles into abstract forms.
Through restrained compositions and careful study of tone, the work isolates moments of natural architecture—temporary structures shaped by wind, pressure, and cold. The series invites viewers to slow down, look closely, and consider how beauty emerges from extreme conditions. The show runs February 3rd to 28th, with the art reception on Friday, February 6th from 6:30 to 9 pm. In addition, join us for the artist talk Saturday, February 7th from 7 to 9 p.m.
