Breaking Barriers – Champions

Edmonton artist Jabari Broodhagen (BRüdi) presents Breaking Barriers – Champions, a powerful exhibition celebrating the untold story of the Coloured Hockey League of Canada (founded in 1895). The CHL was an all-Black league that pioneered the slapshot and butterfly goaltending style decades before the NHL.

The evening features large-scale mixed-media artworks, reflections from Edmonton Historian Laureate Donna Coombs, and live spoken word and music by Cherelle and Riwo. Guests are invited to explore the artwork, meet the artist, and take part in conversations about representation, resilience, and belonging in Canadian sport and culture.
