Barbra Lica

With a unique vocal ability that stresses subtlety, grace, and expression, Juno-nominated Barbra Lica is a jazz and folk vocalist and songwriter of exceptional talent. Based in Toronto, she has captivated audiences all over North America with her genuine warmth and engaging stage presence. Lica performs with her quartet (Tom Fleming on guitar, plus bass and drums) at The Empress Theatre in Fort MacLeod on Saturday, April 11 at 7:30 pm.
In a world where almost everyone appears to have their public image and hashtags in order, Lica’s latest album Imposter Syndrome (2023), explores instead an identity still in flux. Equal parts playful and sombre, these songs flip unapologetically between genres, tempos, and production styles in search of what it means to be a flawed human with big dreams, bigger feelings, and a verifiably awkward social presence.
Lica has performed everywhere from New York City’s legendary Birdland to Toronto’s prestigious Koerner Hall. She also has headlined at festivals around the world including Festival International de Jazz de Montréal, Tokyo International Jazz Festival, Port-au-Prince International Jazz Festival, and Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival, and opened for the likes of Christian McBride, Pat Metheny, Bob Dorough, and Terence Blanchard.
Her work spans six albums and has amassed millions of streams. Her single, The Ghost of Me, took home the 2023 Ontario Folk Music Awards CMRRA Song of the Year prize and she has been nominated for two Canadian Folk Music Awards. Her album I’m Still Learning was nominated for a 2017 Juno Award in the category Vocal Jazz Album of the Year.
“Lica smiles when she sings. You can hear it. When you see her in concert, you’ll see it too. In a word, refreshing.” – CBC Radio
