This week, in honour of what would have been his 83rd birthday, RRR wishes Elvis Presley a happy birthday by playing original versions of songs that Elvis recorded and made his own.

The King’s musical taste was all over the map. We’ll prove that by playing an eclectic batch of side by Ella Fitzgerald & The Song Spinners, Arthur ‘Big Boy’ Crudup, Dean Martin, Bill Monroe & The Bluegrass Boys, Wynonie Harris and more.

Included will be a mini-feature on the evolution of “Hound Dog”, starting with the original recording by Big Mama Thornton, then, a version by Freddie Bell & the Bellboys (the version Elvis heard and absorbed), finishing with the July 1956 Elvis recording.

That’s Sunday at 1pm MT for Happy Birthday, Elvis on Roy’s Record Room, the show that celebrates the sound of the King.

Eleven years and counting!
